Our House

carswell -exteriorcarswell-interiorEverybody needs a house both to live in and to call a home. When we moved it was certainly hard to give up our first house that we purchased as a couple. However many reasons compelled us to take this course of action. One of which was the prospect of being straddled with a never ending (seemed like it anyway) mortgage. We therefore decided to dig into savings and build a home here and pay for it free and clear. No mortgage, no interest and no stress.

With this in mind we have completed the design and contracting phase. We are in the process of applying for the building permits which takes about a month through the slow moving city hall. We hope to begin construction by the end of April. The contractor has estimated a two month construction however I figure at least three months…lol.

My plan is to keep any interested up to date with the process through this blog. i will include descriptions of the process as well as pictures. Attached herein will be a design picture of the exterior and interior dining and kitchen. We will see in the end if the finished product matches the renderings.

Take a Cold Shower!

Take a cold shower, get a room, behind closed doors, these phrases among others are popular and bring to mind love and intimacy. Those of you that know me well are probably thinking where in the world is Ron going with this. Well I can assure everyone this is not my line of thought today.

Today when i say “take a cold shower” I literally mean take a cold shower. During my 58 plus years of life I have always enjoyed a good hot shower no matter the time of year. A hot shower is a good cleaning ritual, a hot shower on a cold winters day is very comforting and a hot shower before bed certainly relax one.

However i have encounter tropical heat and humidity as I never have before. Now mind you I have lived in Alabama, Florida and Georgia the majority of my adult life and it gets hot and humid there. But this tropical heat is something different from my past encounters with Mr. Sun. Also it is true that I have been to the Philippines many times before I moved here. I have been here in January, February, September and October. And i thought I knew about tropical heat. However I have never been here during the Summer months of March, April and May.

Thus I return to today’s theme “take a cold shower.” Here in the Philippines hot showers are not very common, as a rule only in high end hotels or homes that have an instant electric water heater in the shower. The majority of homes, hotels or apartments do not have central hot water heaters as most of you are accustomed. During my previous visits we would always heat a kettle of water and add it to the bath water unless staying in a hotel with the electric heater. This was necessary in my mind and satisfying. My how times have changed. When summer hit at the beginning of March the cold breezes and storms coming from the China coast ceased existing. The winds changed direction and now bring hot air from the Pacific Ocean known as the easterlies. The thermometer rose only about five degrees but a hot five degrees.

Then it happened. My wise and native wife suggested a cold shower in the morning to cool off the body and make the day more bearable. I can not express how right on the money she was. However i discovered something even more amazing, not only does it work in the morning but I really enjoy evenings too. Now i will admit in the beginning it was cold. As time went on however it has become easier and easier. Half of the time the water is so warm due to the fact the water supply pipes are so close to the surface and the sun is so hot! Any other times you just hold your breath for that first dunk and then enjoy.

The next time you get hot and bothered Take a Cold Shower, just like we do living life in Roxas City.

Fun with my Son in the Sun

Working your hands to the bone to support big government, insurance companies and the one percent.

This really came to light when my son was born. Having raised four daughters (mostly part-time and at a distance) while working twelve plus hours a day six days a week I totally missed their childhoods and never really knew them as a parent should. I will always regret this and live with the memory of this daily.

With this in mind while in the hospital nursery bonding with Reez in his first moments of life I decided to do what was necessary to live as many moments of his life right by his side. To raise him full time, teach him everything he needs to be a fine Christian man, and to be remembered  in a positive and loving light. Thus my early retirement and move to Roxas City. A place with good moral and family values. A place that does not require an arm and leg to house, feed and entertain your family. What a good and pleasurable move. Eden and I are sharing all the duties that come with parenthood and are enjoying the many benefits and blessing of having a child.

Thus the title of this article “Fun with my Son in the Sun”. Since we arrived in Roxas City Reez has left behind the processed foods so common with babies and toddlers and is eating a full gambit of foods including fresh fish, rice, potatoes, squash, chicken, yogurt, various native fruits and of course crackers and cookies. Within in few weeks of moving he started walking and has become so mobile. Just tonight we were on our evening walk on the beach and he started running! Speaking of the beach he has become addicted to walking in the surf and playing in the sand thus getting soaking wet and covered in black sand. I must say he is so cute. Then there is his communication. Of course he was jabbering before the big move but now it is non stop. We do not understand the words but I know he does. But we do know when he want more to eat…lol. He has really tanned up and had so many haircuts.

All of this and many other moments have added to Fun with my Son in the Sun. Just another great part of Life in Roxas City.
